The United Methodist Social Principles

As we enter the sacred season of Lent in 2025, our congregation embarks on a transformative journey through the United Methodist Social Principles. This five-part sermon series, spanning the first five Sundays of Lent, invites us to explore the intersection of our faith and its practical application in the world around us. Rooted in the Wesleyan tradition of personal and social holiness, these principles challenge us to live out our Christian calling in every aspect of our lives.

Our exploration will take us through the newly adopted Social Principles, effective as of January 1, 2025. We’ll begin with an introduction to these principles and their significance in our faith journey. From there, we’ll delve into four key areas: the Community of All Creation, addressing our role as stewards of God’s earth; the Economic Community, examining issues of justice and responsible stewardship; the Social Community, focusing on human dignity and equality; and finally, the Political Community, considering our engagement with governance and public life.

Week 1: Introduction to Social Principles (March 9, 2025)

Week 2: The Community of All Creation (March 16, 2025)

Week 3: The Economic Community (March 23, 2025)

Week 4: The Social Community (March 30, 2025)

Week 5: The Political Community (April 6, 2025)

Throughout this series, we’ll ground our discussions in Scripture, drawing from both the Old and New Testaments to illuminate these contemporary issues. As we reflect on these principles during the Lenten season, we are called not only to personal introspection and repentance but also to consider how we can actively participate in God’s work of redemption and justice in the world. This series aims to deepen our understanding of our faith, challenge our perspectives, and inspire us to live out the gospel more fully in our daily lives and in our communities.

Pastor Michael will also lead a discussion group about each week’s focus area, giving us a chance to go a little deeper into what the Social Principles say, and to consider our response. We will meet after worship in Room 3, and discussions will go no more than one hour. You are welcome to any or all the weekly discussions.
